Disney World makes its Villains party an upcharge event Written by Robert Niles Published: June 5, 2014 at 2:19 PM Walt Disney World Resort is bringing back its Villains party, which drew an overflow crowd to Disney's Hollywood Studios last year. However, this time, Disney's taking a step toward containing the crowd level by making the party a hard-ticket event. Tickets will go on sale to the public June 9 via disneyworld.com and will cost $67 plus tax for adults, $62 for kids ages 3-9. WDW annual passholders and Disney Vacation Club members can book now and should gave received that information via email. (If you didn't, the numbers to call are 407-939-1933 for AP'ers and 800-800-9800 for DVC members.) According to Disney publicity, the event will feature "up close encounters with some of the most popular Disney villains, “Hades Hangout & Dance Party,” “Oogie Boogie’s Variety Show,” a Star Wars villain zone, a new “Villainy In The Skies” fireworks spectacular, a villain-inspired pre-show to “Fantasmic!”, face painting, specialty food & beverage, event merchandise and more." One can expect that Disney's trying this as a bit of a trial, and that if the tickets sell quickly, the party might turn as a multi-night event in future years, as Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Very Merry Christmas Party have grown to additional nights over the years. Another reason is that the Boo To You Parade is exceptionally creative and entertaining. I'm not sold on other hard ticket events, however. Released in 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the companys first feature-length film, and the story has played a central role in Disney theme parks. Across town, rival park operator Universal Studios Florida plans to open its Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts ride this summer. The attraction combines elements of a coaster, elaborate sets, 3-D film and special effects. Although its expected to be more intense than Disneys mine train, it also is aimed at families. Family rides are particularly important in this day and age, said Dennis Speigel, president of International Theme Park Services Inc., an industry consulting firm in Cincinnati. They get great reception no matter where they are. They tell a story, and the guests like to repeat, because you cant absorb it all on the first ride. Disneys mine train attraction was built on part of the location once occupied by the Magic Kingdoms 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage, a ride that closed 20 years ago. Disney called the new ride the centerpiece of a massive refurbishment and expansion of the Fantasyland section of the park. The attraction is built into a wooded hill, evocative of the mine entrance in the animated film. The line snakes into the hill where a long queue provides activities for parkgoers as they wait for the three-minute ride.

If you don't buy park tickets until you arrive at Disney World, or need to change your FastPass+ reservations, you can do so in two ways. Each park has a number of FastPass+ kiosks where you can make or change your reservations. Beware, the lines for these kiosks can be long. If you can, download the mobile app, which makes it possible to make and change reservations on the go, eliminating yet another line. FastPass+ experiences work the same way as the legacy system. Each FastPass+ comes with a window of time you will be allowed to enter the ride. Arrive at the ride during that timeframe, get on the FastPass+ queue and enjoy. Do I need to have a MagicBand ? You can use FastPass+ without purchasing a MagicBand. The old paper park tickets have been replaced with RFID plastic, credit-card type tickets that are scanned at FastPass+ kiosks and at ride queues.

Scientists Find Experimental Support for Killer Whales' Ability to Learn New Dialects by Staff Comments A team of scientists from Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute (HSWRI) and SeaWorld San Diego has provided the strongest evidence yet that killer whale dialects view site... are learned. The study found that juvenile male killer whales are capable of learning new call types when they undergo a change in social association. Killer whales have vocal repertoires that scientists call ‘dialects’ because they’re composed of calls unique to particular social groups. Discovering how whales develop these dialects hasn't been possible in the wild because of the inherent challenges in tracking an individual whale’s vocalizations and behavior regularly and for extended periods of time. The HSWRI study took advantage of the unique habitat at SeaWorld that was outfitted with multichannel video and eight hydrophones. This environment allowed the researchers to record and analyze the calls made by individual whales over a five-year period. Learning whether social association affects the calls of killer whales sheds important light on how wild populations of whales interact. Scientists still don’t know if and how populations of killer whales can merge. The data from this study give clues about how that might occur. "The emotional journey that the film takes us and the world that film takes us into is the world that we literally re-create in the theater," Jackson-Randolph said. "We re-create that world through special effects." Food will be a major component of the event from beginning to end, even during the "Concert in the Wild," said Robert Gilbert, executive chef of catering operations for Walt Disney World. People entering the theater will receive a new concoction: "lion chow" consisting of candy pecans, sea salt-toasted chips, candied ginger, golden raisins and dried cherries, served in a bamboo sleeve. Once the first guests reach the queue, the wait time quickly escalates to two hours or more, just a few minutes after the park opens. Avoid this with a FastPass+ for Anna and Elsa. By reserving a time to see the princesses well before your trip even begins, you'll be able to meet them with just a 10 or 15 minute wait -- and without the 4 AM wake-up call to camp out in front of the Magic Kingdom. Of course, even that FastPass+ can be hard to obtain. Your best bet is to book your stay at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel more than 60 days in advance of your stay.
